Acknowledgements and Introduction Jacek Fisiak was a dominant figure in English studies in Poland for several decades (especially in linguistics and in medieval studies), but he also knew that scholarship is and has always been international, and he acted accordingly. He organized many international conferences and he helped numerous colleagues from home and from abroad at various stages of their career, among many others also the editors of the present volume. As a small sign of our gratitude, we have assembled this volume in his memory. Jacek Fisiak had sixty doctoral students; there were many younger colleagues whose habilitation (postdoctoral degree) he supervised or where he wrote a review, and he enjoyed the friendship and admiration of many colleagues in Poland and abroad. Therefore, the present volume can only accommodate a fraction of his colleagues and former students, and his international outreach is also reflected only partly. The contributors come from Poland, but also from England, Germany, Spain, and the USA. Our thanks are due to the publisher, to the contributors of this volume, and to the colleagues who provided important information or helped with the assembling and formatting of the volume; we mention in particular: his wife Liliana Sikorska, furthermore Magdalena Bator, Marlene Sauer and Gaby Waxenberger. We have organized the volume into six Parts: Part I sketches Jacek Fisiak’s biography and provides a list of his numerous publications, and gives some personal memoirs by his wife, by colleagues and friends; Part II contains articles that deal with Old and Middle English literature; Part III has articles that discuss aspects of the history of English and of historical linguistics; Part IV centers on Medievalism and the rendering of a Shakespearean drama for a production on the contemporary Polish stage; Part V assembles studies dealing with Modern English, contrastive studies, and translation studies. Parts II and III have some overlap, because some contributions in Part II also discuss linguistic issues. But most of the articles in Part II start from specific
xii Mostly Medieval texts or text types, whereas the articles in Part III deal with linguistic questions that are not tied to specific texts. We have put the article by Kizeweter and Wojtyś into Section IV, but it would also fit into Part V. The article by Esquibel at the end of Part I forms the transition to Part II.
PART I Jacek Fisiak 1936–2019
1. Life and career Jacek Fisiak was born in Konstantynów Łódzki in 1936, where he also attended primary school. He went to secondary school in Łódź. He received his MA in English from the University of Warsaw in 1959, his PhD in English from the University of Łódź in 1962, and he got his habilitation (post-doctoral degree) from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (UAM) in 1965. In 1961 he spent a year as a researcher at the University College, University of London, and in 1963–1964 a year as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles. He began his teaching career at the University of Łódź in 1959, first as an assistant lecturer, then as lecturer and as docent. In 1965 he started teaching at UAM, first as a docent (1965–1971), then as Professor extraordinarius (1971–1977), and from 1977 until his retirement in 2006 as Professor ordinarius of English. After his retirement, he remained at UAM as a senior professor. He was very successful as an academic teacher: He directed 331 MA theses, and 60 doctoral dissertations. In between his activities in Poland, he was visiting professor (of linguistics or of English) at many international universities: in the USA at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, the University of Florida at Gainesville, the State University of New York (College at Fredonia), and the American University in Washington, DC; in Germany at the Universities of Kiel, of Saarbrücken, and of Bamberg; in Austria at the University of Vienna; in Switzerland at the University of Zürich; in Norway at the University of Tromsø; in Finland at the University of Jyvälskylä. He also worked, especially after his retirement, as professor at colleges and academies in Konin, Słupsk, Poznań, Łódź and Warsaw, Poland. The main research interests of Jacek Fisiak were twofold: on the one hand, he dealt with historical linguistics and the history of English, including Old and Middle English; on the other hand, he was strongly interested in contrastive linguistics, especially in English-Polish contrastive linguistics, in language contact and linguistic borrowing. A practical outcome of this were several dictionaries (Polish–English and English–Polish) which he published. We have counted 11 books which he authored, 43 books which he edited, 82 articles, and 23 reviews which he wrote (see Writings below, pp. 6–20).
4 Mostly Medieval He was moreover a superb organizer and administrator. At the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań he was director (head) of the English Department – called the School of English from 1969 onwards – from 1965 until his retirement in 2006, i.e. for more than forty years. He was a member or the chairman of numerous committees and advisory boards, and he was responsible for several international exchange programs. The culmination of his career as an administrator was his appointment to Rector (president) of the AdamMickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznań from 1985–1988, and Minister of National Education of Poland 1988-1989; he was also President of the Polish-British Friendship Society from 1989–2006. He was a member (and partly also president) of many professional organizations; to mention just a few: he was a member of the International Association of University Professors of English (IAUPE), of the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas, and the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP). Moreover, he was a member of numerous Academies, to mention just a few: the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk, PAN), the Finnish and the Norwegian Academies, the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), the Medieval Academy of America, the European Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters (Paris), and the Agder Academy of Sciences and Letters at Kristiansand, Norway, where he also established a Poznań chapter. He gave guest lectures at many international universities and read papers at numerous international conferences. He organized more than 50 international conferences between 1967 and 2015, i.e. well after his official retirement, and he edited the proceedings of many of them (see Writings below, pp. 6–20). In accordance with his research interests, many were devoted to English-Polish contrastive linguistics, and many to specific aspects of historical linguistics (in particular phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, typology). He founded the International Conference on Middle English (ICOME), which has been continued at threeyear intervals ever since. Jacek Fisiak was an editorial board member of many scholarly journals and book series. He was also the chief editor of, e.g., the journals Studia Anglica Posnaniensia: An International Review of English Studies SAP (from its foundation in 1967 until 2012); Folia Linguistica Historica (1978–2003); Papers and Studies in Contrastive Linguistics (1972–1999); as well as of the book series Studies in English Medieval Language and Literature SEMLL (since 2002, where close to sixty volumes have been published); Warsaw Studies in English Language and Literature WSiELL (since 2010, with 17 volumes published).
5 Jacek Fisiak 1936–2019 In recognition of his merits he received many honors and awards; again, we can mention just a few. He got honorary doctorates from the universities of Jyväskylä (Finland) in 1983 and Opole (Poland) in 2005; furthermore, he was awarded medals from several universities; he received the Knight’s Cross of the Order “Polonia Restituta” in 1979, the Grand Cross of the same order in 2005, and – a rare achievement for a foreigner – the Order of the British Empire, Officer’s Class (OBE) in 1981; moreover, the Knight of 1st Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 2018. He also received not just one but several volumes dedicated to him (see Writings below).
