W owym czasie ministerstwo przyznawało stanowisko docenta niemal natychmiast po uzyskaniu dokumentów z uczelni, dziwiła mnie zatem moja sytuacja pewnego zawieszenia i niepewności. Ponieważ miałem spory dorobek naukowy i spełniałem wszelkie kryteria (z wyjątkiem tych określonych przez partię, a których nie byłem w stanie poznać), sytuacja moja budziła zdziwienie zarówno młodszej kadry (zainteresowanej awansem), jak i starszej kadry profesorskiej, nie rozumiejącej zaistniałej sytuacji. My memory of Professor Jacek Fisiak is of particular nature. I owe him a great lot, even though I was never honored to meet him, personally… I had already obtained both PhD and habilitation degrees; without the docent appointment,12 however, I lacked the accreditation to supervise doctoral proceedings and I had already lost two promising students, potential PhD candidates, whom I had included in my scientific research. In those days the Ministry [of National Education] would appoint an academic to a docent position nearly automatically after the university provided required documentation, hence my great surprise to be left hanging in uncertainty. Since I had already produced a significant scientific output and I met all the criteria (save for those along the party line, which I was not able to even know), my situation bewildered both younger cadre (interested in their academic advancement) and senior professors, who could not 11 Translated by Nicholas Z.
