112 Mostly Medieval This means that, before examples of the partial parallel in Old English poetry can be confidently identified, a thorough search needs to be made for examples of the balanced parallel in the entire Old English poetic corpus, and that they should be listed together with those for Beowulf in an enlarged and renumbered version of the list in McTurk (2006). That such a search is worth undertaking is strongly suggested by the admirable clarity and precision of the great majority of Campbell’s ten types of parallel, which it has been part of the purpose of this paper to illustrate. Once a decision has been made as to how to treat the different manifestations of the compound word paralleled by a two-word phrase, and once the descriptive list of McTurk (2006) has been expanded to include all the balanced parallels in the Old English poetic corpus, the way will be open for a systematic listing and description of all ten types of parallel in the entire corpus.
